Patricia Wilson Wier passed away at home on the evening of October 29th, 2022 in the presence of her husband Stuart and children Sally and Thomas. She is survived by sisters Joan Davis and Carol Torrents, and her brother Steve Wilson. She was very close to her family based in Indiana her entire life. Pat was a microbiologist, accomplished weaver, gardener, memorable cook, and much-loved wife, mother, and grandmother.

Pat was born on September 13, 1949 in Kokomo, Indiana, and grew up on her family’s farm in the nearby town of Young America. Her father, Robert Wilson, and mother, Mary Wilson, ran the family farm and worked in wildlife conservation. Pat graduated from Purdue University in 1971, and went on to earn a doctorate in microbiology from Princeton University in 1977. She met her husband, Stuart Wier, while at Princeton, and they were married in 1973. Their honeymoon was canoeing in the Minnesota Boundary Water for a week, though canoes were pretty new to her. They moved together to Boulder, Colorado in the fall of 1976. Pat taught at Colorado Women’s College and worked in a microbiology lab at the University of Colorado. Pat and Stu had a son, Tom, in 1980, and a daughter, Sally, in 1984, and shortly after Pat decided to work at home full time.

Pat started hand weaving when her children were still young, and continued up until her death.  She wove table linen, towels, curtains, blankets, scarves, and many other things for her family and friends. Her favorite fiber was linen and she grew her own flax plants, and processed them at home to make her own linen for very fine, detailed cloth. She designed her own patterns, fabrics, and color combinations, using many weaves.

Pat also was a loving grandmother to Cadel and Galen, Tom’s two boys. They loved to joke and play with her, and she loved every minute with them.

Though these are tangible aspects of Pat’s life, sharing dates, places and names of the people she spent time with in her family do little to capture the true spirit of Pat as a person. Those that knew Pat know she had an incredible warmth, a big heart full of compassion, unconditional love for her family and friends, a cheerful sense of humor, an adventurous spirit, and abundant tenacity and grit. Her magic and love will be dearly missed.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 10, 2022 at 10:30 am at the St. Ambrose Episcopal Church at 7520 S Boulder Rd, Boulder, CO 80303. Pat’s favorite color was bright red, so wearing bright red at the service is encouraged and welcomed. In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions in honor of Pat may be made to the Nature Conservancy, The Emergency Family Assistance Association (EFFA) of Boulder, or The Small World USA.
