Planning ahead · Questions

The questions worth asking before you sign anything.

Planning ahead should make you feel steadier, not warier. So here are the questions families ask us about preneed plans, answered plainly, including the ones about money and protection that people are sometimes shy to raise. Ask any provider these. The answers should be easy.

Questions about planning ahead

What is a preneed plan, exactly?

It is the gift of total clarity for your loved ones: a documented plan paired with dedicated funding to fulfill it. While reflecting on your wishes offers a starting point, funding your plan is what turns intention into security, shielding your family from financial stress and guaranteeing your final goodbye is fully taken care of.

What does a plan cover?

Whatever you decide it should. Most plans name the path you want, whether that is terramation, water cremation, green burial, or flame cremation, along with the care and ceremony around it, who should be called, and any wishes you want honored. Every item is itemized, so nothing is a surprise later.

Is my money protected?

Yes. Your funds never sit in our bank account. One hundred percent of your payment is placed directly into a preneed life insurance policy issued by Funeral Directors Life Insurance Company, not by us. Regulated by the Colorado Division of Insurance, your money receives all the legal, financial, and policyholder protections afforded by state insurance law, and you receive official documentation from the insurer detailing your coverage.

Does a plan lock in today’s prices?

Yes, for our professional services. Funding your plan through a preneed life insurance policy locks in the cost of our care, ceremonies, and coordination at today’s rates. Because merchandise (such as shrouds, caskets, or urns) and third-party fees (like state death certificates) fluctuate over time, those items are listed at current estimates and paid using the policy’s value when needed. Your written agreement clearly distinguishes guaranteed services from estimated costs before you sign.

Can I pay over time?

Usually, yes. Plans can be funded in a single payment or over a period of months or years, and the arrangement is written into the contract. Tell us what is comfortable for your household and we will build the plan around that, not the other way around.

What if I move away from Colorado?

A funded plan follows you. What that looks like in practice depends on how the plan was funded, and it is one of the things we will explain when you set it up. If you move, call us. We would rather help you sort it out than have you wonder about it for years.

What if I change my mind?

Then you change the plan. People change their minds about this more often than you would think, and none of it offends us. An unfunded plan can be rewritten any time you like. A funded contract has terms around changes and cancellation, and those terms are in writing, in plain language, before you sign.

What happens if the funeral home changes hands?

Your plan remains fully secure because the life insurance policy belongs to you, not us. Under Colorado law, if a funeral home changes ownership, preneed contracts transfer to the new owner so your arrangements remain in place. However, because you retain full ownership of the insurance policy, you or your family always have the legal right to reassign the policy to a different funeral home of your choice at any time.

Do I have to fund a plan, or can I just record my wishes?

You can absolutely just record your wishes, and many people start there. Writing it down is most of the gift. Start your plan online whenever you have a quiet half hour, at your own pace, without needing to sit down with us at all. The money question can wait, or never come up, and we will not push it.

Can a funded preneed plan help with Medicaid spend-down?

Yes. When structured as an irrevocable contract, a preneed life insurance policy is classified as an exempt asset under Colorado Medicaid and SSI guidelines. This allows you to set aside money specifically for your final care without those funds counting toward your individual asset limits when qualifying for long-term state assistance. We provide the precise paperwork required by Medicaid caseworkers or elder law attorneys to verify the plan’s exempt status.

Will my preneed funds have to go through probate court?

No. Because a preneed life insurance policy designates its benefits directly to satisfy your pre-arranged funeral agreement, the funds bypass probate entirely. This guarantees that financial resources are available immediately when needed, ensuring your family is not forced to pay out of pocket while waiting for an estate or trust to settle.

How does my family find out about my plan?

We securely hold your plan in our records, but the best way for your family to know your wishes is for you to share them. We know these conversations can feel daunting, which is why we guide you through every detail of your chosen services. You will leave us fully educated and equipped to confidently explain your decisions to your loved ones. Please tell at least one person about your plan soon. If you aren’t sure where to begin, here are some helpful words and guidance for having the conversation.

Can I do any of this online?

Yes. Start your plan online whenever you have a quiet half hour. Nothing you enter is binding, nothing is charged, and no one will call you unless you ask us to. When you are ready for a person, we are here.

Rather ask a person than read a page?

That is usually the better way with this one. Call whenever you like, and take as long as you need.
