Wayne Gilbert, a Denver poet, first encountered Death at Pablo’s Coffee Shop where he often goes to write. Death came directly over to Wayne’s table, sat down and began a conversation. These conversations continued over many months—not every day, but often enough the two became friends. Once, when Death was unavailable, Death sent Sorrow to meet Wayne. Thus, began another unlikely and unexpected relationship.

Wayne often wrote poems about these encounters with Death and with Sorrow. The members of Us-In-A-Box Theatre Workshop, Annell Weissenbuehler, Andrea Haus, Brennan Weissenbuehler, and Wayne Gilbert created a script from these poems for a thoughtful, provocative reader’s theatre-style poetry performance piece.

Us-In-A-Box hopes to encourage audience members to open their hearts and minds to a deeper understanding and acceptance of death and sorrow as natural aspects of a vital life.

A discussion will follow.
