Larry Kaplan
March 29, 1955 – July 1, 2025
Larry Kaplan passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on July 1, 2025. He left this earth the way he lived: with a smile on his face, humor on his lips and a twinkle in his eye.
An outside the box thinker with a rigorous mind and a penchant for insightful jokes, Larry delighted in challenging everyone around him to think more deeply, and demanded the same dedication of himself. Every conversation with him was full of life, thought, and love.
A lifelong learner, Larry was always reading, or listening to books or podcasts when he wasn’t working on his latest delicious kitchen experiment. If he found a dish or product he liked, he would figure out how to make it himself– whether it was curry, pesto, or making vanilla extract or avocado soap. He constantly sought understanding of the underlying mechanics of whatever he was doing – from borrowing the catchphrase “cooking is chemistry” to his uncanny understanding of angles from pool, racquetball, sailing, and more recently pickleball that made him a pleasure to play against.
Most days, Larry could be found at North Boulder Recreation center indoors and outside, enjoying pickleball with whoever was there and contributing his observations for improving ones game.
Born in Dayton, Ohio, he attended the University of Pennsylvania as a Benjamin Franklin Scholar, where he studied bioengineering and met his future wife. He received his BA and MS in Applied Statistics from the University of California, Irvine. He worked as a statistician with environmental engineering firms, specializing in sampling, statistical plans, and data presentation.
Larry was known for his sense of humor, Dad jokes, and playfulness.
Larry is survived by his wife, Karen; his son, Saul; Saul’s partner, Meagan, Larry’s siblings Richard Kaplan and Karen Kaplan as well as numerous nieces and nephews around the country. His absence is felt deeply by all who knew and loved him.
A memorial/unveiling is planned for July 19, 2026 at 11:00 am. To attend, please email lmkaplangm@gmail.com for location and directions.
