Karen Sowar

Karen Steiniche Sowar, 76, of Louisville, CO, passed away on March 22, 2023 after a brief illness.  She was surrounded by loved ones at her time of transition.

Karen was born on December 14, 1946 to Barbara and Aage Steiniche in Dwight, Ill.  She completed high school at Dwight High School, and then her Bachelor’s of Arts at Indiana University.

Karen met her husband Richard (Dick,) on a blind date while in college.  She married him shortly after graduation, on June 7 1969, at Beck Chapel on Indiana University Campus.

Karen and Dick spent several years traveling and exploring, and eventually moved to Boulder for Dick’s educational pursuits.  In 1981, they welcomed their first child, Kristina.  Andrew (Andy) was born in 1984.

Karen dedicated her life to being a loving mother and wife.  She supported both children in their personal, academic, and sports pursuits, and was always eager to make these experiences fun and flexible. She also encouraged her husband throughout his career which involved intense traveling and time commitments abroad.

Karen loved the connection with her 2 grandchildren, Keeli and Leo.  She spoke with them daily on the phone, and was always thoughtful in sending cards and gifts through the seasons.  She was also very excited about the upcoming birth of her 3rd grandchild, Bodi.

Karen’s death came as a surprise, as we all envisioned her living many more years, and in pursuit of her multiple goals involving family and travel.  She is survived by her brothers Winston and David, husband Dick, and children Kristina and Andy.

We will miss her greatly.  We plan to honor her life with a Memorial Service on May 13, with more details to be released soon.
