Obituary: Caleb Joseph Chastain
Date: July 24, 2023
Beloved husband, son, brother and friend, Caleb Joseph Chastain of Fairplay, Colorado passed from this life on July 24 , 2023 at his parents’ home in Louisville, Colorado. Caleb was 26 years old and is survived by his wife Kendall, mother Cally, father Rick, brother Ben and puppy Buckwheat.
Caleb was born April 6, 1997 in Sherwood, Oregon. He was raised largely in the Vail Valley of Colorado, he also resided in Honolulu, Hawaii; Portland, Oregon; and Mukwanago, Wisconsin while growing up.
Caleb attended Western Colorado University in Gunnison, CO, where he was a sprinter and hurdler on the Track & Field team, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications in 2019. In 2016, Caleb and Kendall met in a shared class at Western and began dating shortly thereafter. They were married in Buena Vista, Colorado in May, 2021, and moved to Fairplay later that year.
Caleb was known for his love of the outdoors. From his earliest years, he was an avid skier, hunter, fisherman, mountain biker, trail runner, ultramarathoner, and mountain climber. His adventures brought him everywhere from the forests of the Pacific Northwest, through the Utah deserts, to the shores of the Atlantic on the beach at his grandparents’ home in Maine. But his favorite place to be was in the high country of Colorado. Caleb summited 42 of Colorado’s fourteeners and competed in numerous mountain bike and trail running races throughout the region, including a finish at the Leadville 100 Mountain Bike Race in 2019. More than anything, he enjoyed sharing his favorite places, activities, and time with his favorite people – his wife, family friends, and dog.

My heart is breaking for all of you, but especially for my dear friend Cally. I can’t imagine the depth of grief you are feeling. There are simply few words that can help at this time of unfathomable loss. All I can say is my heart breaks with you and I love you.
Caleb was the best co-counselor you could ever hope to have. He got me through Summer 2016 when we were on staff together at Camp Chief Ouray. Caleb made a difference in my life and so many other’s. Miss you Princess
Rick and family, I am so sorry for your loss. Such an amazing life! Sorry he was taken from you all too soon.
I don’t know if I have ever seen a family with such an abundance of love for and enjoyment of one another. The Chastain family is truly special to behold as well as be around.
I am so grateful that Caleb was profoundly loved and lived such a full, adventurous life in such an unfairly short time.
